Root Canals

Root Canals in New Braunfels

When a toothache won’t go away or suddenly gets worse, it’s often a sign of a deeper problem inside the tooth. For many patients, the solution is a root canal. While the term has a reputation for sounding intimidating, the reality is much simpler: root canals are a routine, highly effective way to save teeth and stop pain.

At Today’s Smile Family Dental, we perform root canals with the goal of making the experience as comfortable and stress-free as possible. If you’ve been told you need one or suspect you might, here’s what you should know.

What Is a Root Canal?

A root canal is a procedure used to treat infection or inflammation inside a tooth. Deep within each tooth is a space called the pulp chamber, which contains nerves and blood vessels. When decay, injury, or a crack allows bacteria to reach this inner tissue, it can lead to pain, swelling, or a serious infection.

During a root canal, the infected tissue is removed, the inside of the tooth is thoroughly cleaned, and the space is sealed to prevent future problems. A crown is typically placed afterward to restore strength and protect the tooth long-term.

Signs You May Need a Root Canal

Some symptoms are clear indicators that a root canal may be necessary, while others are more subtle. Common signs include:

  • Persistent toothache or throbbing pain
  • Sensitivity to hot or cold that lingers
  • Pain when biting or chewing
  • Swelling or tenderness in the gums
  • A darkened or discolored tooth
  • A small bump or pimple near the gumline

However, not all root canal cases cause pain. Sometimes the issue is discovered during a routine exam or through X-rays, especially if the nerve is already dead. That’s one reason why regular checkups are so important.

What Causes the Tooth Pulp to Become Infected?

The most common causes of pulp damage include:

  • Deep decay that reaches the inner layers of the tooth
  • Repeated dental procedures on the same tooth
  • Cracks or chips that allow bacteria to enter
  • Injury or trauma, even if there’s no visible damage

Once the pulp is damaged, it can’t heal on its own. If left untreated, the infection can spread and lead to more serious complications, including abscesses or bone loss.

The Root Canal Process: Step-by-Step

Despite its reputation, a root canal is similar in feel to getting a standard filling, just a bit more detailed. Here’s what to expect:

1. Numbing the Area

Before anything begins, we make sure the area is fully numb. Your comfort is a priority from the very first step.

2. Accessing the Pulp

A small opening is made in the top of the tooth to access the infected pulp inside.

3. Cleaning and Shaping

We carefully remove the damaged tissue and disinfect the inside of the tooth. Then the space is shaped and prepared for sealing.

4. Filling the Canals

The cleaned canals are filled with a biocompatible material to stabilize the structure and prevent reinfection.

5. Final Restoration

In most cases, a crown is placed to protect the tooth and restore its natural function and appearance. This may be done during the same visit or at a follow-up appointment.

The entire process usually takes one to two visits, depending on the condition of the tooth.

Does It Hurt?

This is the most common question and the answer may surprise you. Root canals are performed to relieve pain, not cause it. Thanks to modern anesthetics and techniques, the procedure itself is typically no more uncomfortable than getting a filling.

Any soreness afterward is usually mild and temporary. Most patients return to their normal routine the same day.

What Happens If I Don’t Treat It?

If an infected tooth isn’t treated, the pain may go away temporarily but that doesn’t mean the problem has healed. Infections can spread to the jawbone, neighboring teeth, or even other parts of the body if left unchecked. You may eventually lose the tooth entirely.

Root canal therapy allows you to save the natural tooth and avoid more complex treatment down the road. It’s a proactive step toward preserving your long-term oral health.
